What is the Uli Uli used in a hula show?
The Uli Uli is a key drum used during hula, a piece of gourd stuffed with seeds or stones and decorated with colourful feathers. Shaken, it emits a rhythmic rattling sound, making the performance feel fresh and working with the dancer’s choreography. In both traditional (Kahiko) and contemporary (Auana) hula, the Uli Uli is used along with chanting (oli) or songs (mele) to heighten the narrative and spiritual connection of the act. The feathers provide a visually impressive element, and the Uli Uli become an integral part of the hula ensemble.
